AkzoNobel (AKZA: AKZOY), pioneering a world of possibilities to bring surfaces to life for well over 200 years, has announced that AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings has launched a new BPA-NI (Bisphenol A non-intent) internal coating, called Accelshield 700, for beverage can ends. This alternative coating provides can makers and coil coaters with a bisphenol-free option to comply with FDA and EU regulations. The product comes at a crucial time as the industry anticipates increased demand for alternative coatings following the recent opinion of BPA restrictions by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Accelshield 700 is designed to meet the needs of challenging food and liquid products, including acidic beverages and those requiring high-temperature sterilization processes. It integrates seamlessly into existing manufacturing processes and aims to future-proof can makers’ selections.

AkzoNobel prioritizes consumer safety and sustainability in its approach to the BPA and bisphenol transition and is actively working with customers to accelerate the adoption of bisphenol alternatives. To learn more about the transition to a bisphenol-free world, visit AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings’ website and access their comprehensive whitepaper.

Commenting on the launch, Chris Bradford, Industrial Coatings Marketing Director, AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings, said:

“With today’s technological advancements, bisphenols are no longer required to create safe coatings for state-of-the-art metal can packaging. BPA-NI coatings are a significant innovation, marking a critical turning point for the industry. Accelshield 700 will help can makers future-proof their selection.”
